I am sure most of the Indian curly girls have struggled to find the right products for their hair. I am also among the same category. Curly/wavy hair is different and the normal shampoos that work for everybody, May not work for you.

Starting this year, I decided to go gentle for hair care. I wanted to start the curly girl method for a long time but I would always give up.  It takes some time for your hair to adjust to no sulfate shampoo.

I firstly started with Vedix hair care routine. If you have no idea about it, let me acquaint you with this. The products claimed to be free of harsh chemicals and most importantly free of SLS and parabens. It had no conditioner so I had no worries about using a silicone-free conditioner.

In short Pros of using Vedix to me were Improvement in the texture of my hair. The products were not great with respect to the pricing so I discontinued using it and searched for curly hair-friendly products in India.

A Basic Guide to starting with the curly hair routine

Curly/wavy hair tends to be on a dryer side. So using products that don’t strip your hair from your natural oils and using products that add moisture to your hair is the best way to get started with this.

The main ingredient to avoid from the shampoo is Sulfate. Curly/wavy hair is already dry and the ingredient that strips your hair of natural oils should be avoided.

As far as conditioner avoids silicone in them. Silicon acts as a cast around your hair just like plastic leaving it smooth and shiny. Silicons are water-insoluble so in order to get rid of this, you would need a sulfate shampoo and this defeats the whole purpose of the curly hair routine.

My Hair Wash routine with minimal curly hair products

Prepping hair for wash-:

I take my hair oiling day very seriously. I don’t get people who take a head shower without oiling it first. If I did something like that to my hair, it would be close to murdering my hair.

For Oil, I choose castor oil and kalonji oil.

Castor oil is great for hair growth and kalonji oil too. Kalonji oil is known to even treat baldness, yes it is a cure for baldness too. Hair grows faster using Kalonji oil(black seed oil). Also adding a few drops of my essential oil. (I have been using tea tree oil for the same purpose) Tea tree oils help in fighting dandruff.itchiness and other scalp related problems. This is the minimalistic thing I love to do for my hair and you should too. hair oiling is great if you genuinely care about your hair health.

Hair wash routine

Sulfate-free shampoo

I had discovered the curly hair method 3-4 years ago, but back then there were a  few quality products and also the price was way out of my budget then. Now there are many budget-friendly + curly hair-friendly products available.

I choose the wow apple cider vinegar shampoo. This is SLS free and has also contained apple cider which is great for here

This shampoo is SLS free, if you are someone who has been transitioning from SLS to SLS free, My advice for you is to be patient. Your hair takes time to get used to no sulfate. It lathers comparatively lesser, you might get the feeling it is not cleaning properly, but trust me this is not the case. Just give some time to this.

This shampoo has a good fragrance to it. Consistency is a medium consistency not too thick and not too runny. It feels gentle on your scalp and does remove the buildup effectively.

Silicon free conditioner:-

I have had a love/hate relation for conditioner. I have type 2c/3a hair and conditioner tends to weigh down my hair and losing my curl pattern. The conditioner I choose was mama earth no more tangle conditioner. Of course, it does not go by its name. Your hair will be tangled as normal, but it won’t be frizzy and easier to detangle.

The conditioner provides needed nourishment without weighing down your hair and mainly it is free from any silicones.

Price -: 292Rs on sale (Costs around 350Rs)

Importance of a microfiber towel: using a hair towel will not only allow your hair to dry faster but will also reduce the frizz caused by the normal towel. If you do not want to purchase this, try using an old t-shirt as a hair wrap. You will feel the difference and reduction in frizz.

My hair after following this routine

Important update-: I saw a great improvement in hair texture when I started the curly hair journey. I wanted to have short hair for 2 reasons. Firstly, because I wanted to try a new hairstyle and secondly to know more about my natural hair texture. My hair is mix of curly and wavy and I wanted to know more.

I have decided to post my hair growth journey every week on Sundays and also the result in growth. Growing 12 inches on hair in a year seems a task but growing 1-inch hair every month is doable.

Also, do tell me if you have used any of the products mentioned and how they worked out for you. If you liked this routine Share this with your curly/wavy hair friends.
